Improved Customisable AF System

The superior AF system from the OM-D E-M1 Mark II has been advanced to provide photographers more auto-focus capabilities than ever before. The ability to customise and inclusion of multi point selector allow the camera to have greater responsiveness to a subject’s size, movement and speed. In addition to the overall AF performance improvements, the E-M1X includes a new feature, Intelligent Subject Detection AF, developed from Deep Learning Technology.

121-point all cross-type On-chip Phase Detection AF

This model features the 121-point all cross-type On-chip Phase Detection AF system from the E-M1 Mark II which allows the freedom to compose how you need to easily capture subjects. The On-chip Phase Detection AF has no light flux limitations, allowing for high-precision AF even when shooting with a high speed lens such as an F1.2. With the E-M1X, tracking of unpredictable subjects is accurate during burst shooting as the camera continuously analyses captured AF information whilst shooting.

Multi Selector

The E-M1X is equipped with a multi directional AF point selector allowing you to quickly move the AF position while looking through the viewfinder. Even during sequential shooting and while recording video you can move the AF area to suit your subject.

  • 1. Horizontal hold / 2. Vertical hold

Versatile AF customisation

You can set AF Target options and AF area positions in both horizontal and vertical shooting positions. Simply turn the focusing ring while shooting in C-AF to instantly switch to MF.

  • MF during C-AF is supported on the M.Zuiko PRO series and M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-200mm F3.5-6.3
  • To use MF during C-AF, M.Zuiko Digital ED 8mm F1.8 Fisheye PRO must be updated to firmware version 1.2 or
later, and M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm F1.2 PRO and M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm F1.2 PRO must be updated to
    firmware version 1.1 or later.
  • Individual AF settings in vertical and horizontal shooting positions
  • MF operation during C-AF

AF Target Modes

The E-M1X feature 6 AF Target modes for shooting small, large and fast moving subjects.

  • Single AF point: for shooting still and small subjects like landscapes and when shooting with a tripod.
  • Group 5-point AF: optimised for shooting moving subjects like people playing ball sports eg.soccer, rugby, etc.
  • Group 9-point AF: for shooting fast moving subjects like airplanes, fast sports, etc.
  • Group 25-point AF: for shooting moving subjects like birds and small animals when 121-point is too wide.
  • 121-point AF: for split-second shooting of subjects that move around the entire screen.
  • Small point AF: for pinpoint focusing on smaller areas.

ON / OFF setting can be configured for C-AF Center Priority when an option other than single target / small target is selected for AF Target Mode. (The default setting is ON)
The camera will focus using the surrounding targets in the selected focus group if it is unable to focus using the center focus target. This helps track fast moving subjects effectively.

Custom AF target mode

Customise the AF target area on the E-M1X to suit the behavior of your subject. When customizing the AF area, you can select from 11 vertical or horizontal points, or an odd number of individual points to create your chosen AF area. Additionally, there is three levels customisation available for the AF area movement in both vertical and horizontal direction.

  • Configuration option 1- AF area settings: select from 11 vertical or horizontal points, or any odd number of individual points
Configuration option 2 - AF area movement steps: available in three levels for both vertical and horizontal direction

Intelligent Subject Detection AF

Developed using deep learning technology, the algorithms in Intelligent Subject Detection AF system allow the camera to detect specific subjects. Through the inclusion of two TruePic WIII image processors, real-time processing of the subject detection is possible which allows the camera to focus and track the optimal point of specific subjects for enhanced shooting accuracy.

  • Only enabled for C-AF+TR.
  • May not be detected depending on the subject or may be erroneously detected.

Subjects detectable by Intelligent Subject Detection AF

  • Motor vehicles: Formula cars, rally cars, motorcycles with Pinpoint AF on the driver's helmet.
  • Aviation: airplanes, helicopters with Pinpoint AF on the airplane cockpit.
  • Railway: bullet trains, trains, steam locomotives with Pinpoint AF on the train conductor's seat.
  • Bird: birds with Pinpoint AF on the eye, head or body.
(Added feature in firmware version 2.0)

Examples of how Intelligent Subject Detection AF will appear to the photographer

  • 1. AF Target / 2. Detected subject (up to 8)
  • 1. AF Tracking position
Halfway press / full press (L sequential)

C-AF tracking sensitivity settings

C-AF tracking sensitivity can be set in five levels according to the subject and scene.

Blocked shot AF response Subject motion Details C-AF Sensitivity
QuickDelayed ErraticSteady
Further improves AF performance on moving subjects which quickly change direction toward and away from the camera.

AF limiter

The AF limiter lets you set the AF operating range and concentrate exactly on the subject you want. Up to three user-set AF operating ranges can be set on all lenses. Custom operations enable instant On/Off switching and setting changes.

  • Compatible with Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds standard AF lenses.
  • Lens settings take priority for Micro Four Thirds lenses with a focus limiter.
  • Custom operations enable instant On/Off and setting changes.
  • Distance setting values are rough estimates.

Face Priority and Eye Priority AF

Face Priority and Eye Priority AF automatically detect and focus on the subject's face and eyes. This feature is particularly useful for portrait photography using a large-diameter lens.

AF low intensity limit -6EV

An AF low intensity limit of -6EV[*] is available for high-precision focusing even in dark locations and for low-contrast subjects.

  • When using S-AF, ISO 100, and an F1.2 lens.
  • Photos are for illustrative purposes only.
  • Screen captures on the monitor are composite images.
